Dignity and Respect-
October 5 and Beyond
By Oscar Chacón
October 5, 2013
Today marks the
launch of a coordinated effort to promote immigration reform that brings
together hundreds of organizations in more than 40 states. Immigrant communities must come out as
strongly as we can on Oct. 5 and the other associated events on the 8th and
12th, both to push for the common-sense immigration reform that our country
desperately needs, and to demonstrate our commitment to working for respect and
dignity for our communities over the long haul.
Because of its devastating effects on Latin American
immigrant families, we must continue to speak out against detentions and
deportations. The current
detention/deportation regime is the result of inhumane and wasteful immigration
policies currently in place that our Congress must correct at once.
Deportations have become a devastating human tragedies in our communities,
where every day, more than 1,000 families are torn apart every day. Congress must move forward to put an end to
laws that punish our communities and in the process transfer massive amounts of
tax payer dollars to private corporations who are profiting from our suffering.
Yet immigrant communities cannot afford to wait as
Congress bickers in partisan deadlock.
We urge the Obama Administration to put an immediate stop to deporting
mothers, fathers and children whose only infraction to the law is to reside in
the United States of America without an immigrant visa.
